Based on Admiral William H. McRaven´s University of Texas graduation speech, this is a book every leader, and anyone who strives to be one, should read. The lessons in this book are exceptional. If you want to do something important or Big in your life, this book is for you.

If you are thinking about quitting, about giving up on your dreams, because you think you have it hard, this book is also for you.

Sometimes, Life can be hard, and very challenging, the sooner you realize this and build up a philosophy to counteract this universal truth, the better you will be.

Admiral William H. McRaven worked with some of the finest men and women the U.S ever produced. As one of Navy SEAL´s top commander, he should know about challenging times and how to deal with them. He worked with some of the toughest men in the world.

People like Tom Norris, who served in Vietnam, who had on successive nights gone deep behind enemy lines to rescue two down airmen.

——————————————–

These are some of these lessons I learnt from this awesome book written by a great leader.

  1. IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD,
START WITH A TASK COMPLETED every single day. Making your bed can be one of them. Make your bed tomorrow in an exceptional way, better than any other time. Imagine your bed will be inspected by a ruthless inspector. Feel good about at least doing something exceptional every morning.

——————————

  1. YOU CANNOT GO IT ALONE:

Find someone to help you paddle (or do whatever is that you are doing)

During his tenure at Navy SEAL he had numerous setbacks, and every time someone would help him get through them by believing in him, someone who saw potential in him where others didn’t. Someone who risk their own reputation to help him advance his career.

No one is immune from life´s tragic moments, but a good team can help you navigate successfully these moments.

Make as many friends as possible and never forget that your success, as well as wellbeing depends on them.

————————————————

3.ONLY THE SIZE OF YOUR HEART MATTERS:

If you want to change the world measure a person by the size of their heart

Size doesn’t matter, color of skin doesn’t matter, strength doesn’t matter, money doesn’t matter, status doesn’t matter, only the size of your heart matters.

People like Tom Norris, who served in Vietnam, who had on successive nights gone deep behind enemy lines to rescue two down airmen, who supposedly was too small, too thin, and not strong enough, proved them all wrong.  He proved that is not the size of anything, but the size of your heart.

————————————————-

4.LIFE´S NOT FAIR, DRIVE ON!

Life isn’t fail, and the sooner you realize this, the better off you will be.

In Navy SEAL training, nothing is more uncomfortable than being a sugar cookie.

A sugar cookie is when the instructor, makes you go full speed towards the ocean and dive in, headfirst, fully clothed, in full uniform, with combat boots, hat, and utilities, and then, go out and fall facedown into the soft sand, and roll from side to side to make sure that no part of the uniform is left uncovered.

The instructor makes you do this based on “supposedly” some violation you did of the SEAL´s training.

Being a sugar cookie tests your patience and your determination like nothing else. Not just because you will spend the rest of the day with sand all over your body, but because the act of becoming a sugar cookie is completely indiscriminate. There was no reason. You become a sugar cookie at the whim of the instructor.

————————————————–

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try and work, you end up as a sugar cookie, don’t complain, don’t blame anyone or anything on your misfortune. Maybe life is teaching you something you should know, or better know.

It´s easy to blame anything or anyone, or some outside force. It’s easy to think is because how you were raised, or what your parents did or didn’t do, or because you had no parents who cared for you. You can blame anything and every one.

The reality is GREAT MEN ARE COMMON PEOPLE, WHO ARE THAT WAY BECAUSE OF HOW THEY DEAL WITH LIFE´S UNFAIRNESS.

There will always unfairness happen in your life. It’s how you deal with it that defines you. You can complain or you can move on and use it as fuel for transformation.

People like Helen Keller, Nelson Mandela, Stephen Hawking, Malala, and Yousafzai all are experts on how to deal with life´s accidental unfairness, and by doing so, they became GREAT.

When life gives you an unfair situation, it can also be a blessing. You become a proud sugar cookie by the way to respond to that consequential unfairness.

Stand tall, look on the future and drive on.

Prove yourself you are bigger than any possible obstacle.

————————————————–

  1. FAILURE CAN MAKE YOU STRONGER:

In life you are going to face a lot of Circuses.

You will pay for your failures. But if you persevere, if you let those failures teach you and strengthen you, then you will be prepared to handle life´s toughest moments”

You will be prepared to create and succeed at any level you want to do it.

When you live in close quarters with other SEALs there isn’t anywhere to hide. They know your level of commitment, if you are giving 100% or not. They see when you are first in line up and ready for anything. They watch you clean your weapon, check your radio and prepare your mission briefs.

They know when you have worked all night preparing for tomorrows training.

You can use your previous failures as MOTIVATION TO OUTWORK, OUTHUSTLE, AND OUTPERFORM EVERYONE. You can fall short of being the best but NEVER of fall short of GIVING IT YOUR BEST.

Regain the respect of yourself. Every decision you make has its consequences.

“Past failures CAN strengthen you, no one is immune from mistakes. True leaders must learn from their failures, use the lessons to motivate themselves and not be afraid to try again or make the next tough decision”

—————————————————-

  1. YOU MUST DARE GREATLY:

The obstacle course is going to beat you every time unless you start taking some risks. Put your fears aside and go for it. Overcome your anxieties and trust your abilities to get the job done.

Assuming risks is part of life. Push the limits of yourself in order to be successful. This will set you apart from everyone else. Know your limits but believe in yourself enough to go for it.

“WHO DARES WIN”, the motto of the British Special Air Forces. This is more than a special operation organization. This is how each of us should live their lives.

Sometimes Life is a struggle, but WITHOUT PUSHING YOUR LIMITS, WITHOUT DARING GREATLY, you will never know what is truly possible in your life, you will never achieve your full potential

—————————————————

  1. STAND UP TO THE BULLIES:

Bullies are all the same, they strive on fear and intimidation. Bullies get strong from the timid and faint of heart. They prove to see if their victim is weak.

If you don’t find courage to stand your ground, they will eat you.

To achieve your goals, and or do whatever you want to do, you will have to find have to become a person of great courage. That courage is inside all of us available at any time. Dig deeper and you will find it in abundance.

————————————————–

8.RISE TO THE OCCASION:

Be your VERY BEST in your darkest moments.

Today you will have to be your very BEST. You MUST RISE above your fears, your doubts, and your fatigue. No matter how hard it gets, you MUST complete your mission. That is what separates you from everyone else. This is what makes you unique and special-.

There is no darker moment in life than losing someone you truly love, and it´s in those moments when you have to be your very best, you must raise to the occasion.  Be your best during those tragic times.

“In the darkest moments, reach deep inside yourself and be your very best”

—————————————————

9.GIVE PEOPLE HOPE:

More people quit during hell week than any other time in training. This is the moment of truth for most of the trainees.

HOPE IS THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE UNIVERSE. With hope you can inspire people and nations to Greatness. With hope you can ease the pain of unbearable loss. Sometimes it only takes one person to make a difference.

LIFT UP THOSE AROUND YOU AND GIVE THEM HOPE. TOMORROW WILL BE A BETTER DAY.

————————————————

  1. NEVER, EVER QUIT:

In SEAL training, in order for someone to give up their training and quit, all they have to do is juts ring the bell THREE TIMES, and the pain stops. However, this doesn’t mean your life will get easier.

But, as the instructor says, “IF YOU QUIT, YOU WILL REGRET IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. QUITTING NEVER MAKES ANYTHING EASIER

Life puts you in situations where quitting appears to be the logical thing to do, where quitting seems so much easier than continuing.

When the odds are against you, quitting seems the easiest way out. But it is not.

REFUSE TO QUIT. REFUSE TO FEEL SORRY FOR YOURSELF.

TRULY EXCEPTIONAL MEN DON’T COMPLAIN. THEY ARE PROUD OF THEIR WORK AND SERVICE. THEY NEVER QUIT.

LIFE IS FULL OF DIFFICULT TIMES, BUT SOMEONE OUT THERE ALWAYS HAS IT WORSE THAN YOU. If you start blaming, your life will be hard and painful. If, on the other hand, you refuse to give up on your dreams, stand tall and strong against all odds, then life will be what you make of it. You can make it Awesome. Never, ever give up.

———————————————–

Remember…start each day with a task completed. Find someone to help you through life. Respect everyone. Know that life is not fair and that you will fail often. But if you take some risks, step up when times are the toughest, face down the bullies, lift up the downtrodden, and never, ever give up-if you do these things, then you can change your life…and maybe the world

Xtra notes:

-The night swim off San Clemente Island is a 4-mile (6.43) swim in cold freezing water, deep darkness, infested by great white sharks, and it’s done in a wet suit, a mask, and a pair of fins.

Courage is a remarkable quality. Without courage, men will be ruled by tyrants and despots. Without courage, no great society can flourish and prosper. Without courage, the bullies of the world would rise up.

-With COURAGE, YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING.

It´s estimate you will meet about 10.000 people in your life. If you could make a difference and change the lives of 10 of those, and those to another 10, and another 10, it would have a massive impact in the world for millions of people.

-YOU WILL BE TESTED LIKE NO TIME IN YOUR LIFE.
