This is an excellent book by Mark Cuban, one you can read in an afternoon.
Mark has a quote I really like, “Success is about making your life a special version of unique that fits who you are-not what other people want you to be”.

Here is another major point from this great book;

Once you have found what you love to do, there is only one goal:
to be the BEST THE WORLD AT IT. It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete, a filling clerk, an accountant, bartender, whatever. YOUR NUMBER ONE GOAL SHOULD BE TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD AT IT.

Here are some the things I learnt from it,

Lesson #1Ask yourself how could someone preempt your products or services? How could they put you out of business? This is a great way to develop a better strategy for your company.

Lesson #2Run your business as if you were competing against the biggest technology companies in the world.

——————————————–

SUCCESS IS ABOUT THE EDGE

It’s not about how much money you have, or who do you know. Its weather you have the edge and the guts to use it.

  1. The edge is getting so fascinated about what you do you could work 24 hours straight and lose track of time while doing it.
  2. The edge is knowing you have to be the smartest guy in the room and you will do or learn whatever you have to be that guy.
  3. The edge is knowing that when you have to choose between something else and your business, you choose your business.
  4. The edge is knowing that people think you are crazy, and they might be right, but you don’t really care what they think.
  5. The edge is knowing how to blow off tension a couple of times per week to go back and refocus on your business.
  6. The edge is knowing that while other people talk about wining and leadership, you are preparing yourself to compete so that you will be successful.

At the end of the day is your ability to execute an idea. Anybody can have great ideas. It’s all about execution.

This is the sport of business. Its not for everyone. You have to figure it out what works for you.

—————————————————-

THE ONE-THING YOU CAN CONTROL: EFFORT

Mark tells the story of how he took out everything he had in his saving account, $7500 to buy his then girlfriend a ring. They went t the movies and after that she realized she lost the ring. After a while they broke up.

In sports the only thing a player can control is his own effort. The same basically applies for business. The only thing an entrepreneur can control is effort.

Mark committed to getting up early, go to bed late and consume everything he could to get the edge.

Every hour of the day he could contact a customer was selling time, then while the customer was sleeping he was doing the things that prepared him to make more sales and the company better.

The worst way to measure effort is by counting how many hours you spend at work. Effort is measure by setting goals and getting results. Ask yourself, do you need to do to close this account?

What do I need to do to win in this segment of the business?
What do I need to do to understand this technology better than anyone?
What do I need to do to find an edge?
What is the edge coming from and how am I going to get there?

The one requirement for success in business is EFFORT.
Either you make a commitment to get results or you don’t
.

———————————————-

WHAT ARE YOU DESTINED TO BE?

Do we know what we are destined to be or do we find out through experience?

Are we really good at something and it’s a matter of discovering?

Is what you love to do the same as what you are great at?

Those are some great questions.

Probably you have tendencies, but have to self-discover along the way. There are infinite possibilities and jobs you can choose from.

Learning is a lifelong process. Scholl is just the beginning of that process.

-Financial debt is the ultimate dream killer.

Never settle. There is no reason to rush.

———————————————————–

YOU ONLY HAVE TO BE RIGHT ONCE

To be successful in basketball you have to shoot 50%. If you make an extra 10 shots per hundred, you are an All-Star. In baseball you get a hit 30% of the time.

In business, to be successful you only have to be right once. It’s not that hard.

No one asks Mark about his work at Mellon Bank or Tronics 2000, or all the jobs he held. Most people focused on what he made successful. They tend to forget all those other things that didn’t worked so well. They only know about how much money he made selling MicroSolutions to CompuServe.

However, all those jobs and positions offered training and learning. Probably it wouldn’t have been able to do what he did without all those previous experiences.

No one wanted to talk about the countless house he spent reading and learning software.

It doesn’t matter how many times you fail. It doesn’t matter how many times you almost made it. All that matters in business is you get it right ONCE.

Then everyone can say how lucky you were.

————————————-

THE WILL TO WIN

Everyone has to will to win; it´s only those with the will to PREPARE that do win!!

Very few things are as exciting as creating a business. The fear, the doubts, the adrenaline. Its always about creating value in the marketplace.

——————————————–

WIN THE BATTLES YOU ARE IN BEFORE YOU TAKE ON NEW BATTLES!
Find a new way to get results.

Hire people whom you can build trust and let them take the ball and run.

If you are the only engine or person in your company, taking new opportunities and challenges will dilute your ability to win the wars you are in, and increase the risk of failure and injury of your primary business competences.

First dominate you core revenue line. Focus on making your business the Best it can possibly be.

————————————-

It’s a huge challenge for entrepreneurs. They want to get into many opportunities. Win the battles you are in first and then you worry about expansion.

———————————-

Those hours and time spent wining your core business and making it the best it can be will pay off far more.

You can literally DROWN in opportunity.

THE BEST EQUITY IS SWEAT EQUITY

As Mark became more and more successful he paid more attention to the common traits of successful businesses. He realized there are rules to success as well as rules of failure in businesses.

——————————————–

Rule #1
Sweat equity is the best equity. The best businesses in recent history are those that began with LITTLE OR NO MONEY. Dell computers, Microsoft, Compaq and many others. They start very little and then expanded.

Investors don’t care so much about your dreams and goals; they want to know how they are going to get their money back plus more.

If you cannot deliver profits they will put someone running your company. Sound hard but it’s the truth.

The reality, for most business, they don’t need more cash, they need MORE BRAINS.

———————————————-

TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE THEY OWN YOU. Because they do. You have to re-earn your customers every day. Make sure that you find a way to get the complains for your company to you, so you have a way to know what’s happening in the day to day.

——————————————————–

Its ok to be a whiner. It’s a first step towards change, as long as you don’t stay there whining without doing anything. It’s when you know something is wrong that you can change it.

THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE

People make most of their choices in life based on the path of least resistance. They take the easy way. The easier you make things for your customers the better you are.

TV, as Mark says, will never die because it’s the path of least resistance from complete boredom.

It´s an interesting concept. If you are in complete boredom the path of least resistance from that boredom is to turn on the TV. It could also be listening to music, or playing video games. Maybe video games take a little more work, but it involves almost zero movement.

So, if you are completely bored, turning the TV is so easy. Nut also its very easy to watch YouTube videos all day long. It’s an interesting concept. Offering content online, like music or podcast is also the path of least resistance.

So, here you can think of great opportunities in your business.

——————————————————-

How can you make your product easier to use and to consume?
What would be the path of least resistance for your products or services?

These are great questions for you to ask in your business…..

—————————————————–

Make your product EASIER TO BUY than your competition, or you will find your customers buying from them.

—————————————————————-

If you can sell you can get a job anywhere, anytime, especially when things are tough and the economy is in recession.

The best salespeople are the ones who put themselves in their customer´s shoes and provide a solution to their problems.

Ask people who don’t buy your product why they don’t. Try to get an honest opinion and you will learn lots about your product, how to make it better and how to sell it better.

———————————————————–

Once you have found what you love to do, there is only one goal:
to be the BEST THE WORLD AT IT. It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete, a filling clerk, an accountant, bartender, whatever. YOUR NUMBER ONE GOAL SHOULD BE TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD AT IT.

When you are the best demand will dramatically grow. PEOPLE WANT TO HIRE THE BEST. They want to be associated with the best. To convince people you are the best, let the quality of your work do the talking.

12- CUBAN RULES FOR START UPS

  1. Don’t start a company unless it’s an obsession and something you truly love.

  2. If you have an exit strategy, it’s not an obsession.
  3. Hire people who you think will love working there.
  4. Sales cure all. Know how your company will make money and how you are going to make sales.
  5. Know your core competencies. Try to get the best. Outside of those core competences hire cheap but the ones that will fit your culture.
  6. An expresso machine? Are you kidding me? Lunch is a chance to get out of the office and talk. There are 24 hours in a day, and when people like their jobs, they will find a way to be as productive as possible.
  7. NO offices. Open offices keep everyone in tune.
  8. As far as technology, go with what you know.
  9. Keep the organization flat. If you have managers reporting to managers your startup will fail.
  10. NEVER EVER buy swag.
  11.  NEVER EVER HIRE A PR Firm.
  12. Make the job fun for employees. Keep a pulse on stress levels.

12-CUBAN MANTRAS FOR SUCCESS

  1. TIME IS MORE VALUABLE THAN MONEY. You have to learn how to use time and be productive.
  2. COMMIT RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS. Being successful entails giving something back. No one gets to the top on their own.
  3. NO BALLS, NO BABIES. Once you are prepared you have to go for it. There is no other way.
  4. WORK HARD, PLAY HARD. Find ways to blow off steam.
  5. DON’T LET FEAR BE THE ROADBLOCK. You can use fear as a roadblock or as fuel. Take on the challenge.
  6. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED AND ALWAYS BE READY. Life is unpredictable.
  7. IT´S OK TO YELL AND BE YELLED AT. When you are passionate about something it´s ok to yell.
  8. EVERYONE GETS DOWN; THE KEY IS HOW SOON YOU GET BACK UP.
  9. IT´S NOT WHETHER THE GLASS IS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL, IT´S WHO IS POURING THE WATER. Do your BEST to control your destiny.
  10.  IT´S NOT IN THE DREAMING. IT´S IN THE DOING. Ask yourself, how are you going to get from where you re to where you want to be? What exactly is going to take to DO IT? rather than just dream about it…..
  11.  PIGS GET FAT, HOGS GET SLAUGHTERED. The biggest mistake is to get too greedy. Every good deal has a win-win solution. Don’t try to squeeze every penny out of the deal. It creates resentment.
  12. YOU HAVE TO BE RIGHT ONLY ONCE
